Unable to save audio settings

hi
i am using windows xp sp3
my mobo is intel dg965ry
m using the onboard sound card and the drivers that came with the mobo
recently i have noticed that i cannot save my sound settings
they reset to default each time i restart
secondly when i change the audio properties and set the environment as quadraphonic it automatically resets to 7.1 surround as soon as i close the audio properties tab

i am not using any other driver or application that could modify the setting
although i do have intekl audi studio installed that came with the mobo drivers

please suggest a solution
