Uncontrollable scrolling from PC game controller?

I recently bought a Steelseries 1gc pc game controller to play with NHL 09 for my computer. I have only one problem, and its really annoying. I go into the game with the controller, and on ANY menu thats ingame, the thing that highlights the selection on the menu goes HAYWIRE! I have to hit the button at precisely the right time! it starts of slow, then speeds up. The controller itself still works, I can use it to play, but with this problem it just isnt worth it. Please help!

Do you have the correct driver installed for the controller

Pretty sure I've encountered this before, so here are a few hints.

1. Make sure controller is calibrated. On Windows: Control Panel > Game Controllers.

2. Even when it is calibrated, if it's got an analogue stick it's possible to slightly move it, and it will acknowledge a direction-change.

3. Could be glitch with that particular game. I've had this happen.
