Unidentified network Windows 7

HI all, I am new to this forum and have been having the following problem for about a month now;
Two Wire 2700 router connected to my Windows 7 pc by network cable works perfectly. Also no problem with the wireless connection either. Added a switch to enable better positioning of the router to the master phone socket and cannot now connect to the router with the network cable only wifi. When I plug the pc into the switch it detects an unidentified network with no internet connection. Doing the normal repair steps ends in a message about ip configuration.
Any ideas bearing in mind that if I take the switch out the PC connects to the router with the same cable perfectly. Yes I have tried two different switches and three different cables.
I am sure it's something so easy to fix I shall laugh about it...........

Hmm; sounds like your switch is acting like a router AND creating an IP address conflict.

A switch should NOT provide DHCP service and not provide DNS settings, so

wire PC->Switch (and nothing else, Not WiFi either).
  • get a command prompt and enter IPCONFIG /ALL
what do you get as a reply? should not contain ANY ip addresses anywhere.

now wire PC->->Router (with wifi disabled), rerun the ipconfig; should now have ip addresses

finally, wire PC->switch->Router (wifi disabled) and the ipconfig results should be identical to those immediately above.

Are you absolutely sure that it isn't working properly and you are just seeing "unidentified network, no network access"? Like, you can't get out to the internet?

The reason I ask, and it may seem like a stupid question if in fact you don't have internet access... Is because I am using a router as a switch in between a PC and 2 Macs and the main router which is on another floor. So my setup is Cable Modem -> Router -> router as a switch -> 3 computers. All of this is wired. I get the "unidentified network, no network access" message when I hover over the icon in the system tray in Windows 7. Yet I'm on the internet just fine and I can access the Macs on the network. I have not tried to access computers outside of my router as a switch yet because my roommates are out of town for another week or so.

The trick to using a router as a switch is to make sure it has DHCP disabled AND that the WAN slot is left empty.
This forces all devices down stream to get IP config data from the upstream router. The router in the middle *may* still provide WiFi and encryption.

Thanks Jobeard and all

C:\Users\user>
if you truly have only one wire from Switch-->PC and see the above, it's all wrong! should be NOTHING.
Either you configured the TCP settings manually or you're not using a switch but rather a router.
PLEASE supply the Make/Model of your switch.

I'm leaving the following for latter discussion:

Does this make more sense?

Same bad configuration. You MUST remove all wires from the switch AND disconnect the PC (wifi & wired ethernet).
Now wire exactly one ethernet cable from any port on the switch to the PC. Wait 30 seconds and get the IPCONFIG /ALL

PS: get me the make+model of that switch P L E A S E :)

Need more patience!

Super. The blue data above is correct and demonstrates that the PC has no TCP settings AND when attempting to find
the DHCP service, it failed and went into "default" settings - - all PERFECT!

Knowing the switch can not be the issue, we move to solving the router configuration.

Need you to leave the switch disconnected from the router and power cycle the router
disconnect it from power, wait 30 seconds and then reapply power, wait another 30 seconds.

Now starting with the Switch->PC setup used to get the above, now add ONE wire
Router->Switch->PC, wait 30 seconds and get another ipconfig /all. Also attempt ping 8.8.8.8

OK, the router is NOT being found by the PC's request for DHCP.

Please report the OS Version (right-click My Computer->Properties)

and the make+model of your router

which A/V did you install?

which firewall is running?

Windows 7 Home Premium
Router is a Two Wire BT2700HGV
Anti Virus is AVG Free 2013
Windows Firewall is showing in control panel as on and I have checked the AVG control panel which shows firewall as "activate now" so I suppose it isn't active at the minute.
Thanks again for taking the time to help

I am not the original owner of the router and it is not using the "Branded" ISP.
I can access the router from 192.168.1.254 and use the custom password set up when I set it up with the current isp four years ago.

Have you tried using cross-over cable between router (LAN ports) and switch.
router(Ports 1-4) <---(crossover cable)---> switch <---(straight through cable)---> PC

Have you tried using cross-over cable between router (LAN ports) and switch.
router(Ports 1-4) <---(crossover cable)---> switch <---(straight through cable)---> PC
PC<-->PC may require this, but modern routers/switches do not. As evidence, the DHCP has provided TCP settings.

The LAN ports (1-4) of the router are actually switchports, and it is a general guideline to connect same device with cross-over cable. But anyway most modern networking devices can automatically adapt to what cable type you are using. If you are going to troubleshoot you better try something safe rather than nothing at all.

What worked for me was go to - network and sharing center - click on the connection - click on properties - click on sharing - un-tick the first box if it is ticked, click ok and restart your computer.
