Well where do I start.
I'm a 63 year old Grandfather who has been a computer geek since stone tablets were replaced by the IBM PC way back in yonder times.
I'm an avid BOINCer (The
Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (
BOINC, pronounced
/bɔɪŋk/ – rhymes with "oink"
[2]), an
open-source middleware system, supports
volunteer and
grid computing.
[3] Originally developed to support the
SETI@home project, it became generalized as a platform for other
distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, linguistics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, environmental science, and astrophysics, among others.
[4] BOINC aims to enable researchers to tap into the enormous
processing resources of multiple
personal computers around the world.) and 'crunch' projects such as Skynet Pogs, Milkyway, Moo! Wrapper, Rosetta and SETI.
I use re-purposed 1 x HP ML 370 G3 and 1 x ML370 G5 severs for BOINC projects as a member of the Gridcoin Team. With these projects I donate my computations to the scientific community to help humanity.
I'm also an avid gamer and love my old games which I play on an old Compaq Deskpro running Windows 98 and of course DOS.
My all time favorite game is Star Elite and this is the reason for replying to this topic. At present for some modern day games, I use an old Dell Optiplex 520X with an HD 7950 GPU attached using an extender as it will not fit into the Dell case.
I'm really looking to play Elite: Dangerous but as you can imagine with my present setup it's impossible.
My youngest son is also an avid gamer although he uses an XBox One and I never get a look in even though I have always preferred PC gaming to the normal 'games systems'.
I honestly don't know whether I would qualify for this competition at all considering my setup, age etc.
However I thought I'd give it a try as nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Many thanks for all your interesting articles and videos.
