Upgrade options?

Ok, i am good to go with changing if its easy, i can always ask here i guess, you guys have been great thus far, again, many thanks.

BUT lol

Ram....should i just get some better ram or just double the type i have now ?

If you have space you could just get another matched set (Identical matched!). Personally, if I could I would go for a complete 6 stick set that has been tested to ensure they work well with each other.

Adding different RAM could well introduce stability issues. As I found out recently, G.Skill told me they would not guarantee that even two identical kits of RAM (like you would have 2x 12GB identical kits) would work in perfect harmony together.

The reality is it is unlikely to cause any problems if you keep to the same matched sets, so its up to you really. Either get a identical set to double your RAM, or go for 24GB (single 6x pack of matched RAM) at a higher speed.

This from Scan would be highly recommended. I much prefer Scan to eBuyer these days -- much better customer service, and prices are usually better as well.

Wow..cheaky that aint it ;p lol

So here goes for an alternative upgrade to what i imagined.

Overclock my exsiting i7 950 CPU to 4GHz using :-

Corsair H80

then up my ram to Corsair Memory Vengeance Black 24GB DDR3 1600MHz CAS 9 XMP Triple Channel as you linked.

Sounds great and leave me with some dosh to treat our lass lol

Any other ideas that i may have over looked regading the upgrade ?

I'd say that's all good, as long as you need the extra 12GB. Otherwise it would be a waste.

If you really wanted a change, you could get another case... :haha:

P.S. Imagine your lass might not have such a happy smile with the remaining dosh though. :p

Cant seem to clarify if the x58 is compatable with the ram Leeky ? i looked at the Gigabytes online pdf list but dont understand it ;p

?

Whats wrong with my case lol ;p its understated mate hahaha

Yes, your motherboard can accept a total of 24GB of DDR3 (upto 1800) RAM. Therefore the DDR3-1600 is absolutely fine. It is not on the approved list, but the timings, speed and size match up to others on there, and it will be fine.

How much time do you have.... I used to own it... Understated is not the word I'd use for it. :haha:

P.S. Its okay really, but are you using both fans in the front? The disks get very toasty without them.

LOL yer, i got the 120mm and the 140mm as standard running as exhausts, i got 2x 120mm fancy blue silents in the front sucking, and 1x120mm in the side vent exhausting too. Very quiet considering !

Just one thing that LinkedKube mentioned which i cant seem to forget...latency ?

The corsair you linked has 9-9-9-24 (whatever that means) ,will i need to alter this or is it fine ?

Also, i just checked Scan for the H80 and their description says it doent come with a speed controller but says its adjustable via a simple press of a button ????

Very confusing lol

Oh !!! and one last thing.... i promise lol

Is overclocking as simple as just setting the cpu to 4GHz via the Gigabyte utility program (Easy Tune 6) that came with the MB ??? please tell me its as easy as that lol

the Corsair H100 is a twin radiator design (fits 2x 120mm fans beside each other), for even more cooling, but requires two 120mm fan mountings side by side, which your case doesn't have.

You gotta love modding ;)

Most people overclock in the BIOS, and that's as easy as changing a couple of numbers.

Haha nice mod, although it means you can only have SSDs...

Not true. 3.5" to 5.25" HDD adapter brackets...look closely  Not my pic but Im doing to same concept with my 300 but with dual rads. His placement for the GPU rad. and this placement for the CPU rad.

The RAM should be fine at the latency set for it. Because you are getting a matched set of all 6 sticks it should be fine as they have been extensively tested to ensure they play nice with each other.

The fan speed can be set by adjusting it on the top of the CPU block. Look at the picture above, and you see the white swirl on the CPU block. That lights up blue when powered, and you can adjust the speed according to how you like it in regards to cooling and noise.

Here is a clearer image of it from Corsair's website:

Description from website: "The digital fan control button allows you to select between Quiet, Performance, or Balanced modes."

:haha: I had the feeling someone would try this. My point was more along the lines of, as it stands currently without hacking the case to pieces. ;)

That said, the design directly above wouldn't need so much work.

Only reason Im doing it is because I got a GREAT deal on my friends 6 month old, barely broken in evga 480 and that sucker runs hot. I'll be kinda forced into putting this 480 beast under water.

Just an thought but with the H80 installed and my case full of fans, what would be the most stable overclock i could expect from the i7 950 ?

Great pics by the way guys ;) i see there are others with the not so understated Antec300 Leeky lol ;p

With Hyperthreading on you should be able to hit 4Ghz, with HT off you can probably get to 4.2-4.3Ghz. But I guess the applications you're using would benefit from HT.

Ok, think i have the info i need regarding equipment for OverClocking so i will take this to the next level and start a thead in the overclocking forum to be sure on how to do it rather then cluter this thread up primarily about hardware changes.

Thanks everyone for helping thus far, trully appreciated and i hope you can advice futher in the OC forum.

I will start a thread called "Upgraded now wanting to OverClock" if you wish to follow my progress ;)

Regards,
Lee.
