I have a Compaq Presario SR5413WM which according to HP I can upgrade the processor. I upgraded the RAM a couple of years ago, and the machine runs fine, but was curious to know if it was worth upgrading the processor.

My current processor is AMD Athlon LE-1640

Operating speed: Up to 2.7 GHz
    Number of cores: 1
    Socket: AM2
    Bus speed: 2000 MT/s

according to HP I can upgrade it to

    Socket type: AM2
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

    Athlon 64 up to 3800+
Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 4800+ (up to 65 watt TDP)
    Sempron - All

I have copied this info from HP's website, and it really doesn't mean much to me, but was hoping that you guys could help!

I would think that the difference is negligible depending on what you use the computer for.

The PC is connected to my TV in the living room and is generally used for videos, netflix, games. It runs well, never seem to have any speed issues, but the upgrade was an idea to get more long term usage out of it

Yeah, you stand to gain nothing if you're using it mainly as a media center. Like bandit8623 said, you should spend the money on a new GPU which will probably have a much greater impact.
