Use Windows Phone 7 as USB storage?

    Hello all, does anyone know a reliable way to get a Nokia Lumia, running Windows Phone 7, to save/load files to a (Windows 7) PC, rather than to Zune? I have found numerous articles describing a registry hack to the ZuneDriver settings, but the registry entries in point (ShowInShell, PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell, & EnableLegacySupport) don't appear on my friend's PC?
    I know Symbian, Android and older versions of Windows Phone (e.g. 6.5) can function natively as USB storage, so it seems a big limitation for the latest version to be restricted in this way?!
