Using two wireless routers

I have a Netgear ADSL router DG834GT its not a great router but it is also an ADSL modem, I want to hook it up to my Belkin N1 which is a much better wireless router and use the Netgear one as the modem but when I do the belkin N1 wireless network isn't as fast as the netgear.

I'm just connecting them using a ethernet cable.

Are there any settings I should be using? should I be disabling the wireless access point on the netgear? Not sure how to make it work better?
