Verizon introduces Droid Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1-inch tablets

Motorola Mobility and Verizon Wireless have announced the addition of two new tablets on the Verizon 4G LTE network. The Droid Xyboard (stylized DROID XYBOARD) tablets will be available in 10.1-inch and 8.2-inch displays later this month.

Both tablets are powered by a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and include a coating of Corning Gorilla Glass to protect the IPS display. There’s also a front-facing 1.3 MP camera and a 5 MP rear shooter as well as an infrared port that works in conjunction with the Dijit app. Dijit allows the tablet to double as a universal remote control complete with programming guide for TVs, Blu-ray players, DVRs and other consumer electronics.

As is the case with their non-LTE counterparts, the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition, the Xyboard tablets will initially ship with Android 3.2 Honeycomb but will be upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich when it becomes available.

The Droid Xyboard 10.1 will be available in three different storage capacities: 16 GB for $529.99, 32 GB for $629.99 and 64 GB for $729.99 all with a new two-year service agreement. The 8.2-inch model will be available in 16 GB for $429.99 and 32 GB for $529.99 with the same two-year contract. Customers who purchase a Droid Xyboard will need to subscribe to a mobile broadband data plan starting at $30 monthly for 2 GB of data.

Additionally, customers will receive $100 off a Droid Xyboard tablet and $50 off select accessories for a limited time when purchasing a Droid Razr, including the newly announced white model, with a new two-year service agreement.

I don't know what Motorola and Verizon are thinking on this "deal"... Why would anyone want to pay for an Android tablet that shares the same price point as an iPad 2, AND get locked into a 2 year agreement? I can understand selling a service plan with your 4G tablet, but the subsidized price for this is way too high.

My thinking as well, Wendig0... In a market that's getting flooded with quad core Transformer Primes (more power for less money than these units), Nook Tablets for $250, Kindle Fires for $200, and lower end tablets (like that Ainol unit for $100), it seems like Moto and Verizon are just oblivious. Sure, 4G is nice, but this price point is absolutely ridiculous. Seems like most consumers would be better served to get a cheaper (and possibly more powerful) tablet, then use a modem or tethering on their phone, if they absolutely must have 4G.

Heh... I still use my Axim X5 as a universal remote for my living room system. Even bought a cheap CF card with high powered IR in it years ago. The dang thing just won't die!

I enjoy my touchpad with Wifi for $99... Would I pay more or a monthly fee for one.. Hell no. I wanted one because everyone else was getting them but I find I don't really use it as much as I thought I would.... I use my desktop and iPhone more. Don't fall for the hype people. They aren't that necessary and your PC does a heck of a lot more for the money.

I accidentally found out about these about 2 months ago. I was at a place that makes packaging for things setting up a printer and networking it etc. and I saw these boxes. the woman made me swear secrecy! Guess i can say something now! It sure has been killing me.

now back to topic: Is it possible that there was a little mix up and these price points are without contract? It just seams unreal to pay the stated amount and being indentured for 2 years.

I agree with Wendy and all others here. I might as well go out and just buy the friggin IPAD2. Also, lets not forget there is no true 4G network. Verizon can buff it up all they want. They are not even close. The only carrier who comes closes to a 4g network is Sprint, and we all know how well their service is in certain areas, yep, right there next to A&T as the worst provider. Looks like I will have make other choices here in term sof tablets. The new Samsung seems to be gaining some grounds when it comes to android tablets.

Motorola/Verzion - you can keep your XyBoard.
