Vista Freezing

A few weeks ago my laptop started freezing (keyboard and mouse unresponsive, but power button still functional) for no apparent reason. A couple of days later I executed a system restore even though there were only two available restore points, both after the problem began, and nothing changed. I have run check disk, virus scan, and malware scan and the problem persists. I thought flash may be causing it, but the freezes still happen after uninstalling and reinstalling flash. System File Checker produced the following entries if interest:

I replaced imapi2fs.dll.mui with a copy from my Vista installation DVD, ran another scan, and got the exact same errors, and the freezes are still happening. How can I repair imapi2fs.dll.mui? Is that issue causing the freezing? Thanks.

Try running a check disk scan. See if this helps. You may or may not have a failing hard drive.

I have run check disk, several times, but my computer still freezes. Is the imapi2fs.dll.mui issue not the problem? It might be my hard drive given that it has been powered on for 38,000 hours. However, no freezing occurs without a browser open (which is why I thought flash could be the problem), and I can go days without a freezing incident. If it was the hard drive wouldn't the freezing happen more frequently or not necessarily?

If the dill is the issue. Just running it from the Vista disk may not do the the trick. If it was modified by a windows update. Their will will be other files it may depend on that where updated to. My guess would be to run a full repair on window from your Vista disk and see if this helps or backup your data and do a full reinstall of Vista. Seeings you have already tried a system restore point and this did not help.

MUI Files: MUI files contain resources that allow Windows interface to display different languages.

IMO, that's a little chance of the freezing symptom - - BUT it could be.
Have you reviewed the system event logs?

I will consider doing a repair install, thanks for the suggestion.

I have checked the event viewer, but there are no errors occuring right before a freeze. Is there anything specific I should be looking for?
