In brief: Samsung is unveiling the latest editions of its popular foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold, at an Unpacked event later today. If you're an early riser or in another country, you can watch all the proceedings live right here starting at 7am ET/ 4am PT.
Although Samsung is expected to reveal a number of devices at its latest unpacked event, its two popular foldables will be the stars.
Based on numerous rumors and leaked official images, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn't going to hold many surprises. There were reports of the design being so similar to its predecessor that Samsung employees were calling it "boring."
One subtle but welcome design change is said to be the inclusion of a teardrop hinge. This will allow the center of the display to form a teardrop shape when closed, enabling the two sides of the phone to fold flat, like the Pixel Fold, whereas the Z Fold 4 leaves a slight gap when it's shut. The teardrop hinge is said to shave around 2mm off the Fold 5's thickness when closed. Also, Samsung has moved the LED from below the camera array to the side.
Specs-wise, expect a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Overall, not much of an upgrade over the Z Fold 4, but we loved the previous model (apart from the price), so the latest iteration could be a great starting point for those new to foldables.
Moving onto the Z Flip 5, this one appears to have received a more noticeable change: the front screen is now much bigger, allowing more content to be displayed. An OnLeaks report claims the outer display has increased from 1.9 inches on the Z Flip 4 to 3.4 inches on its successor. Expect the same primary specs as the Z Fold 5.
Both foldables are rumored to be priced similarly to to their predecessors: $999 (Flip) and $1,799 (Fold).
Beyond phones, Samsung will likely unveil two versions of the Galaxy Watch 6 at Unpacked; a standard and a Classic version, the latter of which could see the return of the much-loved rotating bezel.
The final products on show will probably be the new Galaxy Tab S9 tablet series with the same 11-inch, 12.4-inch, and 14.6-inch sizes. Tablet shipments performed slightly better than other areas in what was a difficult Q1, dropping by just 7% - desktop PC shipments were down 28% - though a lot of that was due to the iPads. It'll be interesting to see what sort of interest the new Tab S9 series generates, especially as the basic model is reportedly moving from an LCD to an AMOLED display, and how it fares against Apple's slates and the Pixel Tablet.
