Ways to fry a motherboard w/ mismatched PS?

  1. The A+ course teaches you that you should never connect a Dell ATX power supply with a non-Dell motherboard, and vice versa. But are there any other mismatches (such as with other brands) that can damage the mother board and/ or power supply?

Dell is the only one I know of. I have seen other propriatary PSUs put they have always had non-standard connectors so you couldn't accidently hook them up to an incompatible board. The Dell issue only applies to older systems Dell does now use standard ATX PSU's. Any dell with a 24pin main connector is standard and some of the later 20 pin units are as well.

This page lists the 20 pin dells to use standard ATX PSUs

The number of Dell models with non-standard connectors was small and the period was brief... just over two years.
As for the 20 pin Dells, the list is long, but incomplete because it covers only certain brands of power supplies used... in the United States and the Philippines.
