What is your mother's PC? Windows XP, Service Pack3?

When you say it's "not recognized" please clarify

    1. Do you mean when you plug it in Windows gives shows you a USB not recognized message?
    2. Are you hearing the USB device connect ding-dong when you plug it in?
    3. Try opening Device Manager and watch when you plug it in. Are you seeing a new device appear in DevMgr but just not seeing the disk appear in My Computer and Explorer?
