Weekend Open Forum: Is PC gaming really dying?

I'm sure PC gaming is dying.

I'm sure Nvidia thinks so too; especially now, after having released
their GTX Titan upon the unsuspecting world ^__^.

Just cause you play a game on a smart phone/tablet does not make you a gamer!!!

How fkin retarded to think "gaming" on a phone is going to cause the demise of pc gaming

Simply put, No. PC's are not going away. Just because each household has multiple PC's and they don't have to replace them as frequently and tablets are now the in thing doesn't really mean PC's are declining. It simply means most people have PCs that they will replace every few years, just like they replace cars and other items every few years, instead of every year or every other year. The PC can do gaming and many other tasks quite well, this is why they will stay.

This particular topic is not about PC's, it's about PC Games.

PC gaming isn't dead especially when a report recently highlighted that games on that platform sold to the tune of several billion dollars (not sure of the exact figures). Why do tech editors, including those from well-respected sites like this one, ask this question ad nauseum?

Oh puh-lee-ze Ranger12, no real gamer would play on a smartphone or tablet lol.

Im a heavy gamer on all platforms Ps xbox PC playing competitive. console are toys for those who dont have money or any knowledge. the sheer horsepower of a big PC rig dominates, in graphics and UI lag time and frames. 120hz monitors, 3way SLI, overclocked hex cores etc will eat all toys coming. consoles are for girls and those who have know idea. I only own consoles to get to play games that are not released on PC and to play with friends that are still playing with toys.

PC Gaming isn't dying. hey OP, did you know League of Legends and Dota 2 are the most played games in the world? How about Minecraft? Notch is the 2nd most influencial person in the world as per Time magazine. These games are from the PC. It isn't dead, PC gaming is the source of the most innovative games on the market today.

Its the ultimate gaming experience and you can have the console experience on the PC. For economies on the decline , I can understand less people can build their rigs. But here in South East Asia, our econmies are doing really well, and the PC gaming market is booming along with mobile gaming market.

One can always tell when news on the tech radar is a bit quiet .... because the "pc gaming is dying" or the "everybody is buying tablets" or "desktops suck due to latest sales stats" headlines appear. Can't blame you, it gets comments and visits to the site and keeps you in a job.

PC gaming probably wont die within the forseeable future, however it will have to evolve to stay relevent and more importantly profitable. The big question is it evolving fast enough?

Hello no, PC gaming ain't going nowhere.

Kinda hard to build your own xbox eh?

PC gamers want the latest and greatest, never going to get that with cheap consoles.

I would have said no 4 years ago, but when I stopped playing WOW and started playing some of the console exclusives like Halo 4 on XBox 360 and Drake 3 on PS3, I decided I like playing on a 56" screen with surround sound in a comfortable chair in my living room more than I like a 21" screen with headphones hunched over a computer. And I've been a hard core gamer on PC And consoles for 20+ years! For me, the changes that made it worth it were:

1. TVs got MUCH better. My LG 3D is amazing. Looks better than my $400 monitor (at least in part because the TV cost 4x that much I'm sure)
2. Internet console play got much better and has a lot less cheaters. I don't care why it's just more fun.
3. I got tired of needing to update my hardware every 18 months to play the latest games.
4. The games have just gotten better. One of the other posters mentioned Tomb Raider. GREAT game! Enjoying it on PS3. Does it look as good as PC on max settings, no, but see my #1 point. It looks and sounds amazing!

Just my 2 cents. I won't be going back to PC gaming. I'll buy a PS4 and an Xbox One and enjoy the spoils of them competing!

As if we don't have options to play PC games on a 56" TV.

Seriously!! Your joking right?

I'm gonna say that PC gaming is not dying. I believe (educated guess) that we will actually see an increase in PC gaming due to the fact that the Xbox One (when it is released) not being backwards compatible and not allowing used games without a paying a "fee". Depending on what Sony does with the PS4 (most likely the same thing as Microsoft), a lot of the console gamers will make the transition to PC gamers. I own consoles myself, and I still prefer to play games on the PC.

PC gaming isn't dying at all. I just took a look at the Battlefield 4 poles for gamers planning to play it on which platform and the poles say that about 72% plan on using the games on their PC, not console. Yes you heard me right, go ahead and vote and it will show you the votes.

Also, PC desktops on the cheap end are going to die but in the Workstation world and Gaming world. They will remain forever. Cheap ones will die because there power will not be much more than a netbook or tablet soon. So people will stop buying them. But the high end Desktops will live forever.

Of course, I can only imagine most of those votes were cast from a PC. This would alleviate most of the console crowd. Not that I really care as I'm a PC gamer only, but that doesn't mean I'm blind to the concept of unfair voting.

Good point! I guess they could post from their iPhones while gaming on their console - but no, they don't even go to this site, this site is about building PCs for gamers and other enthusiasts, not kiddy consoles.
