Weekend Open Forum: Is spam still a big problem for you?

Not to say that they don't still try to land them in my inbox/junkmail folder, but haven't had a real problem in close to a decade. I ain't say'n how I handle them because I'm sure the bass-tards are reading this very article and commentary for clues on how to refine their process.

I was getting quite a few spams a couple of month back.....but now?

Nothing. I don't even receive any about me winning the Nigerian lottery.

my public email account

gobbybobby@hotmail.co.uk

Aprox 150 mails in the junk folder a day.

My private account

Itsprivate@mindyerownbusiness.co.uk

Has resieved 0 Pieces of jumk mail since the day I set it up, I use it for things like applying for jobs (whihc is supricing I get no recruitment junk mail) banking ETC

things like facebook- public account always. I don't trust facebook not to sell my details.

Between the Microsoft Outlook Junk function and Spam Assassin on our mail servers, not much spam lands in my inbox.

Overall, we've seen SPAM has been reduced when compared to many years ago.

One note to a lot of user. If you sign up for a newsletter, it's not really spam, you signed up for it. If you don't like it, just unsubscribe.

Oddly, the mail account I use for Techspot gets a ton of spam, and seems to ebb and peak depending on my level of participation here. The more I post, the more spam I seen to get.

I have no opinion on why this happens, this is a simple observation. Perhaps it's coincidence.

I'm using gmail and very rarely see any spam reach the Inbox. Still review the spam folder before clearing just to make sure nothing has been misdirected. Average about 10-12 spam emails a day, probably half of these are vendors that I've dealt with in the past that never give up.
Many vendors have a check box to get rid of their correspondence, as they don't want the stigma of having the emails tagged as spam. Are you sure you're not cursing the darkness, without lighting a candle?

What has started to annoy me in terms of spam now are the daily deal websites. While I've signed up to a few in my area, which are worth it because of the discounts you get, some also manage to include junk and ridiculous offers in their selection, often sending more than 3 emails a day.

What also has started to annoy me is email chains between large groups of friends, where hotmail doesn't allow you to keep track of conversation loops. Social media seems so much better at handling that kind of thing. Email needs to move on.

I have a hotmail account that I use to sign up for things I know are shady or will possibly result in spam and use a Gmail account for the rest.

these days the only spam i received is from infected messenger contacts. most of them have been inactive though, so deleting the contact solves the problem. and yes, it's a hotmail. my gmail and yahoo account have been very clean too.

We us GFI MailEssentials spam filter at my work. We have weekly spam digests that report around 80% of our total (around 20000 weekly) incoming emails are spam that are caught in the quarantine. of those we get a few that are false positives and a few that do not get caught. If we didn't have this spam filter in place we would be up to our necks in spam. "junk mail sent worldwide has dropped around 80% over the past year" seems a bit optimistic.
