Full Title:What Activates a Supermassive Black Hole? Galaxy Collisions Not the Culprits, Even in the Jam-Packed Early Universe

Science News

A new study combining data from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-ray space observatory has turned up a surprise. Most of the huge black holes in the centres of galaxies in the past 11 billion years were not turned on by mergers between galaxies, as had been previously thought

This very deep image shows the COSMOS field imaged by the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Huge numbers of very faint galaxies are visible. A new study of this field, combining data from ESO's Very Large Telescope and ESA's XMM-Newton X-ray space observatory has turned up a big surprise. Most of the huge black holes in the centres of active galaxies in the past 11 billion years were not turned on by mergers between galaxies, as had been previously thought. Some of the active galaxies with supermassive black holes at their centers that were used in the new study are marked with red crosses on this picture. (Credit: CFHT/IAP/Terapix/CNRS/ESO)

Abe, I have to say, your either studying up to be a Astronaut for NASA, or your e-mail notifier from the NASA.org web site is working "over time"! :)

"There goes Abe in his rocket ship, he's reaching for the star's"! :)

It is my long dream to be an astronaut and reach for the stars!

Landing in a planet, colonizing it, and even finding extraterrestrial life. ow yah, now that would be awesome. :)

Well Abe, you just keep it up! With the type of passion and interest you have shown for this kind of stuff, leads me to believe that your destined for some kind of space work.

Abe.................Guru of the Galaxy! :)

Abe: Guru of the Galaxy I like it! Cool title, But I'd probably be dead before we colonize other planets... maybe my grand children in the future? :)

But hey! I know that I can contribute something right? :)
