From what I under stand in an easy explination. Back in the late 80's both IBM and Mac were all fighting for the King of OS title vs. Windows. Windows won from what I was told because they were the only ones to open up there OS and allow others to install on non-microsoft machines (non-propritery) So the fact that you were not dicated on what equipment to buy attrached buyers. And Microsoft kept updating there software for anyone with any hardware. This also allowed the boom of the aftermarket manufacturing.
Just my 2 cents. from what I learning.
