I'm thinking about building my own PC and i'm really a newb in this area. So my question is can i buy like 3 of the same chips that add up to 6gb and then like 1 chip that's 2gb and run them together? Thanks in advance

Typically its best to run matched sticks, same size, same brand, preferably same batch.

In practice most of the time you can get away with running different sizes/brands.

I'd consider just running your 6GB of matched sticks, and then if you think you'd really benefit from that extra 2 gigs then try that later.
