Will a higher wattage power supply really hurt?

My build requires roughly a 550 to 650 watt power supply. Will it hurt anything to put in a 1200 watt psu? I'm going to be adding some other hardware later.

In a word "NO" but 1200 watts is extreme overkill IMO :)

Tmagic is right, not going to hurt anything. Its not going to overpower your components, it will still give them only what they need, just like the 550 would. It might be slightly less efficient so you may want to check on that if that sort of thing concerns you.

You are probably going to pay more for electricity.

    It will hurt your wallet...?
    It'll also lower efficiency.
    What needs 1200 watts?

    Exactly the point...
