Hi there,
New member with problems!Hubby is rebuilding computer for son for Xmas. Has been doing this kind of thing for years but we've run into problem we've never had before.

Trying to upgrade sons computer for gaming.
Bought new mobo and cpu w/heatsink and fan. Mobo bad so returned all and got new mobo, cpu w/heatsink and fan.
Mobo ran bios and ram test fine so hooked up video card (ati radeon 9250 pci) installed one 512mb DDR PC2700 ram and one 256mb DDR PC2700 ram sticks (both identified in ram test at bootup), Maxxtor 40GB HDD and CD player.
Formatted HD with XP disk in CD (seemed to go fine) and continued with XP installation.
Installation freezes at 34 min remaining (installing devices). No error messages of any kind. Only way for it to continue is by pressing ctrl-alt-del multiple times and then the install continues with no other freezes. (does not reboot at this point).
System reboots as per normal but when it gets to the desktop with runs very slowly, the mouse cursor hesitates/skips erratically when moved and then the whole thing freezes. If you hit ctrl-alt-del several (half dozen or more)times it then starts working "normally" from then on.
We changed mobo, cpu w/heatsink and fan (now have Jetway 939GT4-SLI-G, w/amd athlon 64 3500+ cpu w/heatsink and fan that came with it). We also bought a new case w/350watt ps.
We have changed the video card out with onboard video (on other board) still same problem
We have changed hd with 3 others, each formatted with Xp adn it hangs at the same point.
We even tried installing win 2000 and it does the same thing!
We tried doing the format and installation with only one stick of ram - same problems.
Hubby is pulling his hair out - and he doesn't have much left to begin with!

Any other suggestions?

Edit* Newest attempts to get it to work : shift-f10 now works to "unhang" the system after it gets to the desktop. This replaces the need to hit ctrl-alt-del several times to achieve the same effect.

Hi

Have you tried a new mouse and keyboard, I only ask as shift+F10 is the same as a right click on the mouse...

Regards

THANK YOU!

After working on this problem for FOUR DAYS (and nights), and changing every conceivable piece of hardwarte, and running all sorts of diagnostics, the ONE thing we did not change was the KEYBOARD.

We had tried so many things that didn't work, but I convince Hubby to try changing the keyboard, it certainly couldn't hurt. Re formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP and was SHOCKED that it did not hang or freeze during installation. No more freezing after desktop comes up either!

Sometimes it can be the smallest of things that can escape your attention (like changing keyboards out)that leads to days (and nights) or misery.

Hubby says it is "hummin' like a top" now.

Thanks again.
