I have been waiting for a couple of things to change before buying new PC, Vista to die an unnatural death and the gap between netbooks and laptops to narrow. Not surprisingly both seem to have happened simultaneously. As Win7 was released Intel has relaxed its strict requirements for what hardware spec is allowed for it netbook cpu's, before the vendor gets a discount on its volume pricing. See an earlier article on this site (https://www.techspot.com/news/36743-intel-to-allow-2gb-ram-with-future-atom-n470-netbooks.html). I have noticed that manufacturers are finally releasing netbooks with HD screens and a couple even have gigabit nics, Yippeee!
I have been advising non-computer literate friends to wait until Win7 before they purchase a new computer. I first try to get them to try out a linux variant but most are still scared to go down that path. In the end people follow the popular path when they don't know enough to make an informed decision. Free web browser vs commercial web browser, after all that is what the majority of people use a computer for.
