My Windows Explorer was using 90-100% of the CPU. I have thousands of .avi files (roughly 2.5TB) on my 2 HDD's.

A previous post recommended deleting the default value of "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32" from the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler" in the registry. However, for my system, "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler" the default value was Blank.

When value "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32" was added, the Windows Explorer began behaving normally.
