<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Hi,

I'm sorry to be going over old ground with this thread but none of the previous ones have covered this exactly.

At start up I get the following message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I don't have an XP system disc. System restore doesn't work. All diagnostic tests come back clear apart from occasionally I get an error message saying there is no keyboard attached. I have tried using a USB and Ps2 keyboard.

I have a copy of the corrupt file on cd, but cannot get my PC to even start in Safe mode with the command prompt to copy the file over.

If this is the end of the line for this OS, is there a way I can retrieve my data from the HD?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

as far as getting the data off the drive, pics, documents and such, u can put the hard drive in an external USB case and just drag and drop them to another computer. as far as putting that file where it should be, I am not going into that as I would screw u're system up more.
