Windows Update doesn't update

My Sony VAIO running windows 7 keeps getting a message that it needs to update. When I try to update it, it says a version of the "important update" (Windows Live Essentials) is already in place and it can't update. However this message pops up every time I boot up my laptop. Any suggestions? Can I just leave that message?

Have you tried to update 'manually' by going to Control Panel, System Security, and click on Check for Update under System.

Do you receive any error code when this happens ?

Yes, it throws up the same update that I mentioned.
