Windows Vista boot\bcd 0xc000034 Error

This one has me really stumped.

A friend gave me a Advent laptop that she was having problems with. The vista install seemed in a mess and kept blue screening. I thought a reinstall would cure the issues. So I used the f8 key to access to recovery partition - but also it said the recovery was complete (restore to factory setting - not system restore) - it didn't boot up again on restart - I got the boot BCD error.

So then I tried using a vista disc - but this reinstall failed also. Now each time I boot I get the above message - I can't even get back into the recovery patition to try again.

I have tried using BCDEDIT and the 3 techniques suggested by Microsoft - but none of them work. I have thought about obtaining some utility to delete the patitions and start all over - but what to use.....and will it work ?

Just to note when I try and format using the Vista cd - the format option is greyed out - its as though this partition is locked. But the other 2 partitions I could format

Any ideas appreciated
