Windows Vista - How to save Desktop Icon layout?

I found some tutorial on the net about how to save your desktop icon layout but it was written in like 1999 or something so I wasn't sure if I should follow the guy's steps since it's 2007 and Vista might be different than Windows 98 in regards to the desktop.

Anyway it involved editing the registry and setting some key to a certain value so that the desktop would always revert to the current setup at the time of the value change. So would this be safe for Vista? I'll try to find the tutorial.
