windows xp pro

I have a laptop that did not come witha boot up or recovery cd and it worked yesterday and now today it wont log onto windows. It says there is a root file missing. How do you fix this without a startup cd?

You will probably need to take the HDD out and do a scandisk on someone elses computer (would require an adaptor) if you don't have a CD. I would find any (presumably) Windows XP CD you can find just so you can boot into the recovery console. Someone you know is bound to have one.
