Windows XP problem: can't login to any user accounts

  1. Hi,

This problem happened on my dad's computer, which has Windows XP Professional SP2 running on it. The computer boots, and stops at the welcome screen with the different user accounts. When you click on any account, it says 'loading your personal settings', but after two seconds, the message changes to 'saving your settings and logging off' again. So its stuck on that user accounts page, and won't login even in safe mode with the Administrator account.

Is there anything that can be done before having to install windows again?

It's more than likely the cause of either malware or corruption. Perhaps both. You can try to run a repair installation rather than totally reinstalling. If that doesn't work, the quickest and easiest way out would be to reinstall Windows.
