Windows XP Recovery Console problem

I have a Compaq Presario that stopped working and gives the following error:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem"

I can get in to the Windows XP Recovery Console, but don't know what to do there.

My ultimate goal is to install Ubuntu on the machine, but first I need to get past this problem.

I have Ubuntu on a CD, and I put it in the machine but it does not load. I tried changing the load order in the BIOS to go straight to the ubuntu CD but it didnt work.

Thanks for your help

Sounds like a hard drive failure. How old is teh Compaq...

You usually do NOT want to run the Windows XP Recovery Console, anyway... You want to boot to a Windows XP OEM disk if you can locate one, and run it in repair mode.... if it will run.

Running Recovery console is difficult and can do more harm that good... You should not run it unless you really know what you are doing.

Booting to a Windows XP SP2 or SP3 disk will fix problems by replacing all Windows XP, without damaging other software installes.... UNLESS the hard drive is bad...

So let us know the hard drive brand, model and year built.
