Windows XP won't go past windows screen

  1. Earlier today i got some kind of virus alert from mcafee... so I downloaded spybot search and destroy it found like 27 errors and "fixed" them all after that i restarted my PC and it gets to the login screen.. i click "login" it acts like its going to (I see the background image come up, no icons) then it goes back to the login Windows main screen...

    So basicly.. it goes from logging in loading settings.. to logging off and saving settings..

    any help?

    What you describe is a typically a damaged hard drive, or a failed one... but you can likely fix it with an investment of time, by cold booting to your original Windows CD, then moving forward until you get offered the selection of running in repair mode, or the next screen which is booting to R for repair.
    This will enable windows to repair the damage done to the Windows Install, and usually will not cause damage to your other installs and documents.
    You may have to download your Windows updates all over again.
