Wired network not working but Wi-Fi is

Hi there,

I've been searching countless web pages and saw some other people having similar problems as me but I cant find any solution to mine.
My internet connection was fine until the router went down for maintenance I suppose. ipconfig shows that I have an IP address and default gateway as normal. The connection on the wired interface is showing I'm connected to the internet but I can't ping outside of the default gateway.

When I tethered an internet connection from another system (using the same cable and socket), I can use the internet on my pc. I've also tried most of the things I could find but it is still not working. Here are the things I have done till now:

>ipconfig /release
>ipconfig /flushdns
>ipconfig /renew

>netsh winsock reset catalog
>netsh int ip reset reset.log hit

>ran system restore
>installed new drivers for the onboard NIC
>made sure there are no proxy settings and ipv4 and ipv6 are set to automatic
>uninstalled all antivirus and disabled firewalls
>plugged in the cable to another system (and the internet still works)

My limitation is I live in an apartment where the connection is provided only via wall socket to their router which I have no access to. But since the wall socket is still giving internet on another system im pretty sure it is my pc's problem. Please help.

System spec:
windows 7 64bit

Another possible reason (less likely) why you cant access outside your default gateway is that the gateway is actively preventing your access either by blocking your MAC-address or IP address access outside your gateway. Have you tried plugging in another computer? Does it get the same IP address with your previous pc? Can you also post ipconfig /all results with your wireless connection only.

The DHCP has given out an address, so the MAC is NOT being blocked !

[1] Normally problems arise whenever Node is not Hybrid BUT when that IS the problem, one or more of the IP addresses are missing. In this case, they all seem to be correct

Notice however, how [2] differs from [3] - - the subnet (by definition) is the gateway address[3] but the pc address is NOT in the same subnet (ie 10.23.192.x is not the same as 10.23.194.x )

OR IS IT? with the netmask of 255.255.240.0 ALL these settings are just fine!

From your description I gather you're at a university or housing project where the Internet is provided (ergo their router and you can't touch it). Another clue is the private range of 10.x.x.x to allow more users on the subnet.

Please describe OTHER issues you have as ping is not fatal and every device has the choice to not reply to ping
so that you may not be able to ping some.domain.name but could easily access it via your browser.

Please site specific examples of non-ping failure you are suffering.

Yes, that was a given. If that was the cause, then the DHCP would not have allowed the IP configuration that now exists as that is how it is implemented.

Apologies; This comment is NOT correct. OpenWAG is an open source project adding function to LinkSys routers.

Yeah I live in a student accommodation. I was thinking it was my pc's problem so I held back from reporting it to the management just yet.

Tried pinging google.com, bbc.co.uk, and even the provider's homepage ask4.com. None of them work.

would have said NO, but your following post shows you've made that jump already :0
Yeah I live in a student accommodation. I was thinking it was my pc's problem so I held back from reporting it to the management just yet.
thought so :) and yes, it still could be
Tried pinging google.com, bbc.co.uk, and even the provider's homepage ask4.com. None of them work.

Get any connection you can, get a command prompt and enter ROUTE PRINT
Paste the results into [ code ] block [ / code ] (remove the spaces 'twix the brackets)

Also try this tracert google.com and paste results into a code block too.

As your PING GOOGLE.COM found the ipaddress, that means you accessed the DNS and got back a reply.
(even though the settings show the same address as your router in all cases, the router is NOT the dns; just a relay point to the value held in the router settings - - very typical.)

try this too: command prompt and enter notepad \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
how much is in that file, a few lines or 1000's ? If 1000's, <ctl>F google.com - - is there one?

>uninstalled all antivirus and disabled firewalls
On Windows 7 (which I have too), the default firewall should be enabled.
As you are in a public environment, set the network type to PUBLIC unless you want to share with your school mates and then use HOME (not recommended).

Later, download Avast! Free as your A/V.

Hi,

Sorry for replying late. Had no internet till today. It seems that the problem is fixed after few other people were complaining about not getting a connection as well. Pretty sure the problem was their router.

I gave a call to the provider's support center and what they did was only trying to go through stuff that I did before on my own. they tried giving me a different IP address from the DHCP pool and it still didnt work. He said there was "something wrong" with my computer settings. I couldnt wait and and backed up my drives and did a reformat and fresh install of windows. It didnt work either back then.

Thank you so much for trying to help with my problem. You can close this topic now. Cheers
