The only internet access I get is from an unsecured wireless connection. I am not allowed to touch or mess with the router in any way.

Recommend a wireless signal booster for receiving?

Anyway I can get a little bit more bandwidth for myself? I'm not trying to download the planet or anything, but I would like to get more than 5kb/s.....

It sounds as if you are not connecting to YOUR router but something near by.

You can not improve reception, but only strengthen signal output - - ergo you can't improve
