what would be the most energy efficient way of putting my computer in slumber mode with least amount of energy being consumed, but be able to not have to shut down all the way. pardon my grammer

Laptop> set power setting for 'sleep' AKA 'Standby' when lid is shut.

Use either Hibernate of Standby. Set times in Control Panel> Power Options> Delete current power scheme> set new power scheme> Save.

Any of these will save your work, take you offline and keep the computer on a low power setting. IT will depend on which operating system you use as to which are available.
