In my computer at the moment i have an x550, i have no idea what my psu is, does not say anywhere!
I am getting a 8400gs very soon (due for delivery).
I got a little carried away over the week and do not have the funds for a better PSU, would it be ok if i was to install my new 8400gs without getting a new PSU? (I can't wait to be able to play WoW on ALL high settings and max reso with excellent framerates)

You will be okay. The 8400GS isn't exactly a power-hungry card. And it's likely to pull less power than the older X550.

How come when the 8400gs is so much newer than the x550?

i am going to try this when it arrives?

if it isn't enough, what will happen will it blow up all my computer components?

The X550 is part of ATI's X series of cards, which is three generations older than their current cards. The 8400GS is an NVIDIA card, but based off their previous generation hardware, and is consequently far newer.
