Xbox One X sales skyrocket as people buy the wrong console

Facepalm: Imagine if you’re expecting a shiny new Xbox Series X but receive an Xbox One X instead. It’s a scenario some people are facing after the current-gen console shot up Amazon’s sales ranking charts yesterday—the same day XSX pre-orders went live.

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, the Xbox Series X followed the same path as the PS5 and RTX 3080 yesterday as the rush to secure pre-orders caused sites to crash. Microsoft’s machine was out of stock even faster than Sony’s, and it seems some people—or bots, hopefully—got the words “Series” and “One” mixed up.

With the next-generation of consoles almost here, sales of the Xbox One X have been declining for a while, especially this year, so it was a bit strange to see it up 747 percent on Amazon’s Movers & Shakers charts—it was sitting in fourth spot at one point. Currently, the XOX is at number 30.

Considering the similarity between the consoles’ names, and the difficulty some people might have differentiating the Amazon thumbnails, it’s to be expected that a few confused consumers will buy the Xbox One X by accident. Less tech-savvy parents could easily make the mistake, as could those frantically trying to find a Series X in stock and overreacting when spotting its predecessor. One twitter user admitted to being “half asleep” when mistakenly ordering an XOX.

Amazon isn’t helping things: typing “Xbox Series X” into the search bar brings up numerous Xbox One X bundles below the XSX, which is “currently unavailable,” of course.

It would be nice to think that many of the Xbox One X machines were snapped up by bots unable to distinguish between the two consoles. They were used to grab many PS5s and RTX 3080 units that ended up on eBay, though Nvidia has been taking action to stop the practice—at least when it comes to its official store.

The good news for people who made a genuine mistake is that Amazon will allow the Xbox One X consoles to be returned for a full refund.

I will say this for Amazon - their return/refund/exchange system is the best... All you have to do is click "return" and they'll refund no questions asked. You even have about a month to return the item if you already got it - and they'll pay the return shipping.

Still, for sales to go up over 700%, this must be more than just a few fools... probably bots mislead by the similar titles... OR.... did the price of the older XBOX recently drop?

Ι'΄ll go with 20-80%.

20% bots with buggy programming (if you are a pro scalper with bots and all and you are a ***** and you can't program your bots correctly, you go out of business) and 80% plain old barely-more-intelligent-than-a-cockroach customers.

Plenty of ppl have got plenty of money to waste too and most won't even notice until it's too late.

AMD, GPU Dept, missed the party too.

Whomever in the MS marketing department decided it was a good idea to have two names so close to each other perhaps should have reconsidered. The general populace is pretty dim, and having two names so very close to each other from one consecutive console to the next will guarantee problems like this.

Hey, their naming is totally logical - Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X...

Calling the successors Xbox Series One S and Xbox Series One X would be the icing on the cake ?

(warning: sarcasm)

I keep waiting for the YBox.... As in... Why would I buy it :)

I don't have an xbox - I would have to look up it's name - or read the byline - I think a whole bunch of reviews going back years - may help - though it's annoying as Amazon clumps some products - so have to click down - to get just the right one on reviews

when I see articles on here - I just think latest Xbox iteration - don't even try to understand the names

This literally makes no sense. The products don't even look the same. The naming convention is fine. Microsoft didn't expect folks to be so lazy as to search for Xbox and then click buy prior to confirming that the product selected is correct.

Naming fail by MS, plain and simple. How could anyone possibly get confused with this line of products:

Xbox One S (X1S /XOS)
Xbox One X (X1X / XOS)
Xbox Series S (XSS)
Xbox Series X (XSX)

The consoles have similar storage options and descriptions. For folks buying as gifts, it’s not obvious at all by the names which is the current console, and that’s a straight up marketing fail however you look at it. The One made no sense at all to come after the 360, either, but at least they were distinguishable enough. To make matters worse, most simply refer to any as Xbox. In contrast, Sony’s naming convention, even if just given PlayStation to go by, it is obvious to anyone which console is the latest just by the name if you’re presented with more than one in some search results.

Am I surprised? No. I just wish MS would learn to count already.

Idk if I just fail but Amazon search results have never been to my liking. And those melded together reviews from various products.... I wonder when people will start to realize, why don't I just order it from Walmart? The quality exceeds Amazon.

And this is what happens when you have such an awful naming scheme for your products.

This would have never happened had the console been called XBOX4 as it should be.

Some companies like Walmart seem to be taking advantage of this mistake too. I thought an xbox one x would be cheap since the series x is coming out but Walmart's online site has it listed for $548.99. It wasn't even that much new! lol.

The sellers seem to be taking advantage of customer's confuse as well. A new Xbox one X on amazon and walmart cost $548.99 and up. There is even a deal on the first page of amazon that says "newest microsoft flagship xbox one s" and us selling for $446.95... Those prices themselves make them seem like they are a new product.
