XP Home works but Pro dont

I have a old desktop that was running Xp Home. I reformatted and tried to install XP pro and when it would get to 'installing devices' it would hang and black screen. When you would restart it would do it again. So any way i installed home and for some reason it worked. I just tried to update to Pro and it still hangs at the same place. Now I cant get to windows or safe mode or restore it. What do I do? And what caused it?
