XP network tool

    MS has a network diagnostic tool to validate your TCP environment (NetDiag.exe)
    (requires IE browser )

    To install the Support Tools, run the setup.exe package. After you accept the End User License Agreement (EULA),
    all necessary files are installed to the %Program Files%\Support Tools folder.

    System Requirements
    Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP
    5 MB of free disk space
    Windows XP Service Pack 2
    Note: The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools are not supported on 64-bit platforms.

    You must be able to validate as a client using Genuine Microsoft Software

    Router incompatibility!

    this KB is related and reports some incompatibilities in routers are discovered with
    this tool.

    HOWEVER, UPnP is not really required and can be circumvented, so don't go out and
    waste your $$$ on a new router :)
