Hello: My husband got up this morning to find that his computer had been taken over by xp restore virus. While I have been able to read threads in the past and fix our business computer, this seems to be over my head. Completely no icons - desktop, no access to internet. I googled my problem and found a thread with Broni and tried some of the things listed on the thread about the same problem. Unfortunately, I was not a member yet. When I joined, I saw that it has been posted that I shouldn't follow the instructions for other members. My bad.....I have never had a problem following instructions in the past and fixing my problem. My fear is that I have run something I shouldn't have and may have made the problem worse. If you can't help me - I understand. I transferred unhide to a flash drive from my computer and it does nothing on his. I tried loading not in safe mode and in safe mode to no avail. Can't seem to restore icons/files. Also, tried to run tdsskiller and combofix - I hope this hasn't caused me more problems...figured I better be honest from the start. Please let me know if you can help....

Welcome to TechSpot! And you 'honesty' is fessing up you've tries a few things is noted and appreciated.

There are several malware programs currently making users 'lose' files and programs and icons et al. But the good thing is, they are not lost, but just hidden. You found following directions meant for another didn't work. While we may run some of the same scans, what we do with the results is very specific for each person.

Please follow the steps in the Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal thread HERE.

NOTE: If you already have any of the scanning programs on the computer, please remove them and download the versions in these links.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.

Note: You may have some of these programs on your desktop already. If you do, I would like you to uninstall them, then use the links in the threads for the programs. Since you can't access the internet with the problem computer, you can use the flash drive to download the programs, then install them on the problem computer to scan.

My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
[o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
[o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
[o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Reminder to be patient
If I have not replied for 2 days, you can send me a PM reminder. Include the URL of your thread. Please do not send me a PM to tell me your logs are up.
If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.

No worries.....

Hi Bobbye: I dropped my computer off earlier to the computer guy from my office. I was just over my head and frustrated. I might have tried if I had received this earlier today but it's out of my hands now! whew! Thanks for your response! Hopefully, when I return from vacation it will be "all fixed"! I have found this website to be most helpful in the past and will continue to use it, if needed. Kindest regards, Kelly

Thank you for the update. Sorry you decided to pay for the fix. I replied in less than 12 hours after you posted. You will find that beats response time on most other forums.
