XP SP3 - freezing on Welcome screen about 50% of the time

Hi there,

New to this. I've just eradicated a rootkit with the help of Broni in your Malware forum. :) Now I just need to get this welcome screen sorted out.

It started well before I had malware issues - but for the life of me I can't link it to any particular program or hardware installation. When I turn on the computer it occasionally - not always - freezes/stalls on the Welcome screen (before the windows music plays). Occasionally it happens on the black screen prior to the welcome screen. Sometimes if I restart it starts up properly - other times no joy. have not had any problems starting it in safe mode.

I did a search of the forum and found a few threads about this kind of issue but they were very old, and not so much help for me. I understand that it may be a driver causing the problem, but there seems to be a whole raft of problems which may be causing it. I'm also not sure how to update drivers, or what drivers I should be updating so would appreciate some pointers there.

Generally speaking, the computer never has any other problems with freezing or stalling while in use.

Summary system specs: Let me know if you need any more system information.

Perhaps some faulty driver or a sour DLL file freezing your XP up. Do you have the latest XP updates? You could also go through drivers, and update video, chipset and network drivers. Clean up your temp folders also and uninstall some programs you don't need :)
