xp UNABLE TO LOG OFF

XP user. Just recently unable to log off. I CAN log off by using Control+ALT+Delete and then clicking Logoff but NOT thru the Start menu.
I have Norton Systemworks and Anti-Vrus 2007 installed as well.

I have read several postings that are dated earlier. I thought there might be more recent definitive answers.

Thanks for the help.

The most likely cause of this is a program that has failed to stop and is sitting in the computer memory. Norton is a likely candidate.
Run msconfig (Start > Run > [msconfig] > Startup tab: Disable all and apply. Services tab: Hide microsoft svcs and then disable the rest. reboot.
Power off - if it stops normally you know that one of the programs you have disabled is the culprit.
Go back to msconfig and renable the services set first and then work through until you find which one causes the problem.
If this does not work, let us know.

Further to what AlbertLionheart,said -

1.The Norton Removal Tool is HERE

2.If you want to keep Norton,try -

Turn off floppy drive scanning on shutdown

1 Start Norton.
2 Click Options.
3. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
4 In the Norton AntiVirus Options dialog box, in the left pane, double-click Auto-Protect.
5 Click Advanced.
6 In the right pane, uncheck Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.
7 Click OK.
8 Restart the computer.
