Nokia and Apple develop smart phone browser
Nokia is working with Apple to provide an open-source smart phone browser. Utilising components from Apple’s Safari web browser, Nokia will combine Nokia’s Series 60 platform with the WebCore and JavaScript components used in Safari. Nokia aims to provide the new browser to all its Series 60 licensees, meaning that phone makers such as Samsung and Panasonic will have the new software by 2006.
Apple emphasized the open-source aspects of the deal and its history of partnering with open-source developers. "This is very much us working with the open-source community," said an Apple spokesman speaking on background. "Nokia has taken the base work we’ve done with KHTML and KDE and worked with us to deliver the code back to the open-source community."
