Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has introduced a 2.5-inch hard drive that employs new power consumption efficiency features. Laptops eat battery power alive, and we need to keep looking at better power consumption strategies to try to combat this. Hitachi maintain they are doing so, claiming that their Hivert (Hitachi Voltage Efficiency Regulator) technology can improve power efficiency by as much as 30 percent, extending battery life by up to 20 minutes for an average workload.

Becky Smith, vice president of strategy and marketing, said the extended battery life feature would particularly appeal to "road warriors," who value extended battery life.
