Dell to use AMD chips?

By Derek Sooman

On January 29, 2006, 10:49 AM

More rumours are circulating about the possibility of Dell using AMD chips in addition to those from Intel. Michael Dell has claimed that the company does not have an exclusive relationship with Intel, and that using AMD chips is therefore a possibility. Dell has yet, of course, to announce any concrete plans to do so, but the amount of rumours going around connected to this matter does make one raise an eyebrow. The move would, of course, allow Dell to make cheaper machines, without hurting its financial results.

1. What I fear is that they only use AMDs budget line of processors for their cheapo PCs. Then use Intel for their XPS line. This would advocate the thought that Intel Processors are more powerful than AMD processors.
2. Yeh this could be a disaster, if its not marketed correctly. AMD has always been the best for me, so I'm always going to stick with them. I love Intel as well, so I'm not bashing them. I have love for both. But, this could cause another war in the already tense AMD/Intel war for 2006. This year, Intel isn't backing down, and they are focused on becoming number 1, instead of number 2. I dunno, I guess only time will tell this story.
3. this would be a great move because then it'll make AMD and Intel work harder in both their low-range AND high-range processors even more!
4. Dell won't be switching to AMD because of the cheap CPUs. I'm pretty sure Intel will give Celerons to Dell for free if it has to, just to keep AMD out. The reason for Dell to go AMD (IMHO) is to get the faster AMD CPUs to make their server and high-end machines look more appealing.A dumbuser doesn't give a damn what is insdide their dirt-cheap Dell. OTOH, somone putting together a datacenter or looking for some serious horsepower is interested in getting the most performance and power consumption that is less than ridiculous.
5. I've been hoping this will happen for a while now, but you guys make excellent points and I'm not sure. As jmag said, I would hate it if they used AMD's budget processors as a base and advertised the intel chip as an upgrade. But I have heard it's mostly for the higher end stuff which would be fine. I agree that a lot of people don't care which brand of processor is in their cheap dell or even know the differences. It would be nice for those users that want a gaming machine from dell. It's not the path I'd take but I still think its good to give people options.
6. Well, it is true that the average Joe Blow won't particularly care which cpu is in his $300 PC but I can still see Dell as showing Intels as upgrades to the AMD's. I mean, for only $50 dollars more you can upgrade from a 2.2ghz Sempron to a 2.8ghz Celeron D. This is how users will perceive it, they will then figure AMD is just a budget cheapo chip manufacturer that will be ass slow and give them problems.
7. This could go either way in terms of disaster. On one hand, we can have an XPS system that sports a beast of a processor. On the other, the cheap machines could become just that. Cheaper. Dell should stick with Intel for the low-end machines, and stick with AMD for the high end machines. (Where the performance really counts!)
8. I think Dell, specifically Michael Dell, is just dangling that carrot in front of everyone. Partly this is to make more people turn their heads at Dell's products ever so often, and partly this is to force Intel to sell processors to Dell at an even cheaper price. I, like many others, believe it would be great if Dell starts selling AMD processors. It is fairly obvious that Dell will sell AMD processors in their computers sooner or later, cheap-o lines or the more expensive series. The market has to grow eventually, and Dell can't hover above Intel forever especially since the trend in the market has been a slight shift to the AMD side. If Dell wants to sell more computers, they will have to accomodate and appease everyone.
9. I suppose this would work out for everybody in the end. Think about it. Dell puts some pressure on Intel, gives AMD a chance to make some good offers which will, in the end, give the end users more choice and cheaper prices.I'm no fan of Dell though, I'd never buy one, so I guess this doesn't effect me anyway.
10. finally a real XPS take that intel chips ***imagine te posibilities(that is if they use FX line of processors)***hope Apple follows this exampleIntel chips on apple come on!!!Remember AMD shows GHZ dont mean anything!!!!
11. AMD on Dells! They came up with a bright idea. I hope they will not just make Sempron systems.
A dumbuser doesn't give a damn what is insdide their dirt-cheap Dell.
Some look for Pentium and Windows XP. Others just look for high value numbers and if it's compatible with high-speed Internet.
12. DELL is just threatening iNTEL with a switch to AMD so Intel can give in to DELL for sweet dealsi dont mind..cuz im trying to get a cheap dell laptop and that would benefit me..hmm
13. Should Dell sell computers with AMD CPU's seems to be the eternal question. I'm not holding my breath but it would be nice to boost AMD sales more.
14. I dunno, Dell's new system was pretty rad. Put a opteron in that sucker, you could overclock the living daylights out of that sucker. Most likely these are just rumors....for the moment. Thought i'd totaly be for Dell going AMD. That would rock. Dell puts out some good stuff. And if you think about it, Dell coudl play both sides....Whati mean is, mabye they could get better deals from both if they are competing for sales......
15. I have a Dimension 8400, quite happy with it.I'll build my next rig myself, though.Would be nice if you could DO someting in the bios.
16. I build all of my machines but I do recommend Dell's for people who are not PC literate. I can't believe Dell still doesn't offer any AMD CPU's. Intel must be paying them something insane for them not to want to offer them.
17. Originally posted by DragonMaster:Some look for Pentium and Windows XP. I would be willing to bet, if this goes through, that either chip will be an option at any performance level... And I'm also willing to bet that AMD will always be the 'upgrade' and it will be at a premium which many people will find to be 'too much' for the extra bit of performance you'd be getting. All in all, I think AMD in Dell will be relegated to the few people who :a. Know Ghz isn't everything, that heat and power consumption are also equally important factors.b. Will actually buy a Dell instead of building their own system.I believe a and b are almost mutually exclusive. If not the intersection of the sets is a very small one. (Can you tell I've been doing finite lately? :p)
18. How many times have we heard this before? It's the same old song and dance.I swear Michael Dell continually raises this possibility merely to negotiate a lower cost from Intel.
19. Come on guys, we dont know for real.... you guys know the Dell hate amd for no reason...
20. There is no hate in the corporate world. Only profits.
21. Ugh, Dell is going to give up on Intel...well they'll be sorry eventually when Intel comes out with its new line of chips in the coming years.
22. i doubt it, gamingmage, Dell's long friend is Intel... Dell for surely out of business if they kick Intel out...
