AMD continues to work with sub-$100 laptop projects
Even though it technically operates at a loss, AMD plans to continue work in supplying in the processors used in the sub-$100 laptop sector. These CPUs are used in areas such as the OLPC project, as well as the Personal Internet Communicator, both very low-cost embedded PCs designed to be used primarily in third world countries where PC and internet access is extremely rare. To the contrary, AMD believes this will help them expand their market into areas around the globe.
Instead, AMD sees the project as an opportunity to help the company step into emerging markets and increase market share, said Richard at a DigiTimes International Newsmakers of 2005 seminar held in Taipei on March 2.
Short term profit isn't always a goal that makes sense, and hopefully this means that growth for AMD will continue to be strong.

Anyway, even if they do this for Africa only, it is a good idea, and it proves that AMD also cares about the education, and not the profit only! Why don't the Intel guys do this also? Shame! Good luck to the AMD team, I hope that the quad-core will be as succesful as the dual-core.
