Dell offers free CPU upgrade to irate customers
Many people have been putting Dell's pricey XPS 700 system on order. With dual-core Extreme Edition processors available for it and dual 7900's, it's a very high-powered machine ready to go for those who don't want to put together their own. Due to delays which Dell is not willing to release details on, people still have not received their systems more than a month later. To alleviate complaints caused by this, Dell is offering free CPU upgrades to those who have been waiting the longest.
To those who buy into the upgrade, a shiney new Core 2 Duo chip will be used instead of the CPU they ordered with the system. Being that Dell has only begun production of these systems last week, they are likely to extend the free upgrade to other customers as well. It's an optional upgrade, and one that takes some patience – those who get the upgrade face more delays.
