HD DVD players to go below $500 in 2007?
HD DVD players may enter a much more affordable market towards the end of this year, with some manufacturers claiming that we could see sub-$500 units. Most of it is speculation, driven by lowered cost for components like chipsets as time goes on, and a reduction in units coming off the line dead. It isn't too far off, given that some players can now be had for $600, such as from Toshiba. Blu-ray is still a bit more expensive, which may gave HD DVD a boost, since cost is hugely important for most home consumers.

You can buy Toshiba HD-A2 now for $450.00 and less from online retailers. |
| zipperman on January 21, 2007 9:35 PM | Do you mean computer DVD players or Home players.
My PC DVD Player was about $100 CDN. High definition channels have to be paid for monthly. Haveing just a player and a HDTV set does not get you HDTV stations. You need an add on receiver. Correct me if i'm wrong, but that what Rogers Cable tells me. |
| ThomasNews on January 22, 2007 7:41 AM | I guess they mean "more" manufacturers will have cheaper players soon. |
| howzz1854 on January 23, 2007 3:58 AM | it means the actual HD DVD player that hooks directly to your HDTV, not the stand alone HD DVD drive that could be put into your computer, which so far is not yet on retail shelf. (although you could still buy it from rare retailers).
you don't need a HD cable box to be able to watch HD DVD at home. since the player connects directly to your HDTV. but you DO need an HD cable box if you want to watch HD programs like HBO, Showtime, or local channels. HD DVD and HD cable are two separate things. and HD DVD drive and regular DVD drive, which you bought for 100 canadian are also two separate things. a regular DVD drive is about $35 USD (16X dvd-R write speed) while a HD DVD drive could cost you around $500 USD. |
