US-based start-up Eye-Fi plans to release Secure Digital memory cards with integrated Wi-Fi chips that would allow digital camera owners to send pictures remotely via Wi-Fi to a home PCs or to upload them to photo-sharing websites.

Because the wireless functionality resides on the card, the networking functions won't interfere with the camera, the company said. Thus, people can keep snapping away without worrying about the Wi-Fi chip hogging the camera's processor.
The card is set to cost about $100 with storage capacities around 2GB and is expected to go on sale later this year. While a little on the expensive side, particularly with flash prices constantly dropping, the card does offer the added wireless functionality without the need to buy a camera with integrated Wi-Fi. The company is currently negotiating with about a dozen websites to allow direct uploads from cameras containing the cards.
