PC World names Vista biggest tech disappointment of 2007

PC World has posted its list of the 15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007, and Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system ranked at the top of the list. Here’s what PC World had to say about the OS: “Five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do? No wonder so many users are clinging to XP like shipwrecked sailors to a life raft, while others who made the upgrade are switching back.”

Mac owners and even some XP users love to bash Vista. The truth is – in my opinion – that although Vista has had a rocky start and definitely has its flaws, it isn’t such a bad platform and it’s going to supplant XP eventually. Microsoft wasn't alone on the list, however, as PC World was also disappointed with AT&T’s broadband service for Apple iPhone, Mac OS X Leopard, Facebook’s Beacon ad system, Amazon’s Unbox, among others. You can visit PC World’s website to read the reasons why each of them made the list.

Seriously, what do they want! Do they expect it to do everything including read your mind, and be able to do all this on hardware thats outdated!
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I would agree with Canadian (mind you, we are both Canadian). Fact is that XP is a 6 yr OS and so many new technologies have emerged during that time frame which require a new OS. As I see it there are 2 sides to this coin. The first is that some of the truely innovative features which were supposed to be in Vista were stipped out in order to launch on time (ie the new Windows file manager). This stripping of features has left a bit of a bad taste in the consumers mouth as they really don't see the need to upgrade to Vista. Yet, so many of the actual value of the Vista OS lies in the backend. The other side is that new technology and a need to simplify the interface has made for the necessity of this OS. I remember when SATA came out and almost all of the IT sector was up in arms saying it would take years to stabilize and become a viable alternative to IDE. Yet, in a short spanse of time SATA has become a dominant technology which is soon to entirely replace IDE as a hardware interface.

I don't think Vista is bad. In fact, I would even say that the "issues" we have seen with the Vista deployment have been the same issues we face with the launches of XP, Win 2000, and Win 98. Service pack 1 will be released and then perhaps people can get off the MS bashing bandwagon (at least until MS has a creative marketing campaign to start slamming Apple and all it's Leopard issues".

Everyone can have there opinion. Some people think its ok. I for one don't. I understand you want something new but I don't really think vista is it. They could of updated XP with all the new technology (Directx 10) plus whatever else you think you need. XP does what I and many other people want it to do. Work and work fast. Which it does. Vista is completely new and severly overly bloated. It runs slower on all hardware. Especially the older hardware. That really makes me mad. Look sure everyone wants new but not everyone can afford. And if we follow microsofts get rich plan we would be filling up landfills with perfectly good computers . To me its like the new start button they tryed to create on XP..The new one..I still use the classic. Why change something that works and works fast. That is my point. If you want something new by all means enjoy but don't force it down our throat. There is even apples new OS that many people do enjoy. Or even the new linuk which is looking like a very good competitor very soon! Sure they all are good systems but so is the tried and true XP .. so I and many people arn't gonna change just because microsoft thinks we need something better which in my and many other people option it isn't. If it was maybe we would.... We think they need to go back to the drawing board and come up with something better. Will they? Hopefully if they want people to stay with the windows operating system.

I think Vista has give a much needed update to the PC platform. This new OS brings windows up to date, and into the 21st Century. There are a number of new feature which make it a worth while upgrade.

Vista Premium came with my Dell 6400, it worked ok (The sidebar did slow it down a lot, so I had to take it out, anyways it served one purpose: nothing), but while I was installing iTunes, I accidentally missed my finger and pressed the ON/OFF button on my laptop. Vista turned off normally, I thought this wouldn't be a problem... Guessed wrong, Vista didn't came back to life and I had to format my hard drive and install XP. What I'm trying to say is that I think Vista is still not reliable, any small software accident can break it and some features Microsoft promised don't work ('cough, Readyboost). I don't think is the biggest dissapointment, but is no good either.

Apple's OS X 10.5 Leopard disables the wireless access on the same Macbook while Vista runs flawlessly! PC World was even quoted by Apple as saying that Microsoft Vista run better on a Macbook, what they should have added was better than Apple OS-X Leopard! That's just hilarious to me! I'm glad that they didn't miss this problem and list Leopard as #8 in their Tech Disasters list.

I work for an ad agency and Vista has been a great new addition. On a daily basis it really is a gem and works without many hitches. It could be that we do run the latest and greatest hardware and software and that is a big reason we don't have many issues. I can certainly say I get more work done now than I did with XP! I also don't have to wear my "No, I won't fix your computer" shirt much anymore, that is for certain! I think it's simply popular to bash MS becuase it increases hits, reader responses and makes trolls feel better. Just my 2cents.
