Despite significant activation problems over the weekend, Apple announced this morning that it sold its millionth iPhone 3G yesterday – crushing the pace set by its predecessor which took over two months to reach that number. However, unlike with the original iPhone, Apple unveiled the newer model simultaneously in 21 countries.

But iPhone sales are only part of the success story. Developers are cheering too, on news that iPhone and iPod touch users have already downloaded over 10 million applications from the App Store since its launch on Thursday. A huge milestone, indeed, though perhaps not as impressive considering the number of useful free applications available coupled with the fact that there are millions of original iPhone and iPod touch devices already out there. All in all, it looks like Apple is well on the way to reach its goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008.
