VLC media player 0.9.2 released
After two years in development, VLC, the popular open-source player has just moved from the 0.8.x versions to version 0.9.2. The newly updated software remains small and lightweight while bringing a new interface for Windows and Linux systems as well as new inputs, more codec support and new on the fly audio and video filters.
In addition to playing just about anything you can throw at it, VLC can also transcode videos and songs from one format to another – sans watermarks or limitations whatsoever. You can find a full features list for every supported platform here, where you’ll also get a good sense of the vast number of formats supported. Head over to our download section to grab your copy for Mac, Windows or Linux systems.

Sweet - just wish the buttons and the volume slider weren't so tall - guess I'll actually be looking for skins this time around. Can't wait to start tinkering - so far I've only tried playing a few .264 files which always worked in 0.8.x anyway. Adding 18,000 flac files at one time really chokes it up though |

Although this version is vastly improved it terms of UI (especially the Windows version), what it lacks in beauty VLC delivers in functionality and usability. |

There is also a portable version for those who don't like installing programs. Of course, this will also run from a USB stick. |

A truly tasty piece of software, something that plays your files without the excessive call backs to the mothership like media player, itunes etc remotely tapping into the users media playing behaviour in the so called 'helping us to improve your future usage' crap |
